New Features and Enhancements in Storage

QoS or Storage Quality of Service

With the use of Storage Quality of Service, you can now centrally monitor the all-around storage performance. This allows you to create policies using CSV and Hyper-V clusters in this version of Windows Server.

Storage Replica

Storage-agnostic, synchronous replication between servers, block-level, synchronous replication between clusters for disaster recovery, and stretching of a failover cluster between sites; these are now enabled through the use of Storage Replica. This allows mirror copying of data in physical sites w/ crash consistent volumes to ensure a zero data loss in the file system. The opposite of this replication method permits site extension outside metropolitan range but with the probability of data loss.

Storage Spaces Direct

It enables you to build highly scalable and available storage using servers with the local storage system. It streamlines the management and deployment of software defined systems of storage. It also unlocks the utilization of new classes of disk devices (NVMe and SATA SSD) which were not possible in the previous versions using shared disks in Clustered storage spaces.

New Networking Capabilities and Improvements

TCP Performance Improvements

TFO or TCP Fast Open has also been applied. The default ICW or Initial Congestion Window has been increased to 10. The TCP Fast Open decreases the time needed to create a TCP connection. Then, the larger ICW allows bigger objects to be transported in the initial burst. This mixed method will ultimately reduce the time needed for the transmission of Internet object between the cloud and the client.

Software-Defined Networking

Using this new capability, you may now route and mirror traffic to new and current virtual appliances. Coupled with Network security groups and spread out firewall, it allows you to easily secure and segment workloads in a method which is similar to Azure.

Using the System Center Virtual Machine Manager, you can now manage and deploy the whole SDN or Software-Defined Networking stack. You can associate SDN policies with VMs and containers, plus manage the windows server container networking by using Docker.

Computer Area

Nano Server

It has an upgrade on its module in constructing Nano Server images, as well as separation of a physical host, and the guest VM functions and support for various Windows Server editions.

A lot has been improved in the Recovery console, which includes separation of outbound and inbound firewall rules and also the capability to repair the structure of WinRM

There are various done in Hyper-V Time Synchronization Service and in Wind32 Time. With these enhancements, there is a great benefit for the virtual and physical machines because of better time accuracy. The latest server operating system can now host the services which are compliant with the regulation that requires a 1ms accurate when it comes to UTC.

Remote Desktop Services

You can leverage from the Azure SQL database when you can deploy a highly available RDS deployment, which is for RD connection brokers in higher availability mode. To do this, you must use Azure SQL DB for the Remote Desktop connection broker in high availability environment.

Windows Containers

There are new features and improvements in the container support of this new version of Windows Server. This will give an enhanced performance, simplify network management, and will support the containers on Windows 10.
